New York, April 8th, 2005 – Ward-Nasse Gallery is pleased to announce that Cityscapes :Lifeforms in Motion, an exhibition of new paintings and photographs by celebrated artist Steve H. Lewis, will be on display between April 8th – May 1st, 2005. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, April 9th, 3-7 pm. This series of paintings and photographs are shown for the first time since his group show in December of 2004.

Mr. Lewis’ background as a scientist, a doctor and an author are manifest as the artist investigates semi-realistic, pattern-like photographs and surface structures. In this exhibition, the artist explores the more apocalyptic and dark nature of city landscapes. The paintings and photographs are presented together in a juxtaposition, creating a holistic, singular artwork. Cityscapes, with its "59th street Bridge", depicts a surreal bridge resembling a Rockwell painting while "Shaft" is reduced to pure forms.

The artwork evokes atmospheric images of urban culture, conveying emotional and intellectual meanings through abstract forms and tonal range rather than through identifiable subjects. His photographic work is almost all digitally enhanced: he studies nature's surface structure with the precision of a Pathologist’s eye. Mr. Lewis’ work searches for deviations in normalcy, enabling renewal to drive the artistic direction.

He is able to capture the mundane in a compelling way, without imitating soft-focus painted techniques. For the artist, the camera becomes an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, finding beauty in places we didn’t know it existed.

Steve H. Lewis has exhibited extensively in the United States. His work is represented in public collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Vero Beach Museum of Art and the Aspen Art Museum.
